Talent Support in Austria

The support for gifted and talented young people is mainly given and managed by federal ministries of education and of science in Austria. In addition to this, regional school ministries have initiated several institutions and activities to give local support, especially in schools. School psychologists are also involved in this network of support within the framework of public organisation for testing and counselling. Additional associations like ECHA-Austria provide special programmes outside of the school system for gifted children and adolescents.

As one of the cornerstones of structured talent support work in Austria, the local branch of the ECHA organisation was founded in 1998 by Sieglinde Weyringer and Franz Mönks. The main aim of this association is to organize annual conferences for teachers holding the ECHA-diploma or ECHA-certificate, for officials in the school administration and for researchers and students. Since 2004 ECHA-Austria has been organizing the annual Platon Youth Forum, which is an international summer camp for gifted adolescents (age 15 – 20) from all European countries featuring issues of the European Union. In 2011 Platon European Forum will start providing a summer camp for gifted students (age 20 – 25) to set activities in the European integration process. ECHA-Austria is also involved in book publishing, it releases books on recent research and experiences of practice. ECHA-Austria also does research in the field of gifted education, especially on values education, intercultural education, and school development.
